Air Force plan to get rid of A-10s runs into opposition

It’s about cost. The A-10 is modernized and paid for. The price of the single-engine F-35 keeps rising and will cost around $160 mill with R & D FOR ONE AIRCRAFT. The A-10 costs about $2000 per flight hour to operate; the F-35 will cost twenty times or more per hour of flight. There has not been an A-10 lost since 2003. So why replace it if it’s not broke? A flight of four A-10′s can carry the same amount of ordnance as a B-2. The USAF will sacrifice a fleet of 300+ A-10s for 20 F-35′s that may or may not be available until the 2020′s. If you’re a Soldier or Marine who would you rather have overhead – an A-10 pilot on his 5th deployment and who can stay for an hour or an F-35 who can hold overhead for 10 minutes? Yeah, I have 17 years in the A-10 and the USAF will mortgage anything to get their next ultra-expensive stealth toy.
