Camel’s urine is efficacious in the treatment of skin diseases such as ringworm, tinea and abscesses, sores that may appear on the body and hair, and dry and wet ulcers. Camel’s urine brings the secondary benefits of making the hair lustrous and thick, and removing dandruff from the scalp. Camel’s milk is also beneficial in treating hepatitis, even if it has reached an advanced stage where medicine is unable to treat it.
In the al-Jazeerah al-Sa’oodiyyah newspaper (issue no. 10132, Rabee’ al-Awwal 1421 AH) there is a quotation from the book Al-Ibl Asraar wa i’jaaz (The camel: secrets and wonders) by Darmaan ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez Aal Darmaan and Sanad ibn Mutlaq al-Subay’i:
As for camel’s urine, the book suggests that it has numerous uses which are beneficial for man. This is indicated by the Prophetic texts and confirmed by modern science … Scientific experiments have proven that camel’s urine has a lethal effect on the germs that cause many diseases.
Among the uses of camel’s urine, many women use it to wash their hair, to make it longer, and to make it lighter and more lustrous. Camel’s urine is also efficacious in the treatment of swelling of the liver and other diseases such as abscesses, sores that appear on the body and toothache, and for washing eyes. End quote.

Christian mother ‘forced out of Heathrow job after hate campaign by Muslim fundamentalists’
By CRAIG MACKENZIE
Last updated at 1:49 PM on 28th November 2011
A worker who claims she was the victim of a race-hate campaign by fundamentalist Muslims because of her Christian beliefs has launched a landmark case against her former employers.
Nouhad Halawi, a saleswoman at Heathrow Airport’s World Duty Free shop, said she and other Christian staff were systematically harassed by Muslims.
She alleged the intimidation included:
Sacked: Christian Nouhad Halawi who claims she was harassed by ‘extremist’ Muslims
Bullying a friend at the airport for wearing crosses.
Muslims telling her she would go to hell if she didn’t convert.
A Muslim colleague insisting she read the Koran. And;
That Jews were responsible for the September 11 terrorist
Mrs Halawi lost her job at the perfume counter in Terminal 3 in July after 13 years when she spoke out about bullying by a small group of ‘extremist’ Muslims at the airport.
The mother-of-two had been the subject of a complaint by an Islamic colleague but when she raised her own concerns as a Christian, she said she was the one who was dismissed.
Her case for unfair dismissal is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre, who believe it raises important legal issues over whether Muslims and Christians are treated differently by employers.
Mrs Halawi, 47, who came to Britain from Lebanon in 1977, said: ’I have been sacked on the basis of unsubstantiated complaints.
‘There is now great fear amongst my former colleagues that the same could happen to them if one of the Muslims turns on them.
‘This is supposed to be a Christian country, but the law seems to be on the side of the Muslims.’
She says that she had always got on well with her Muslim colleagues, but the atmosphere changed with a growing number of employees promoting ‘fundamentalist Islam’.
Mrs Halawi told the Sunday Telegraph: ’One man brought in the Koran to work and insisted I read it and another brought in Islamic leaflets and handed them out to other employees.
‘They said that 9/11 served the Americans right and that they hated the West, but that they had come here because they want to convert people to Islam.
‘They say that Jesus is s***** and bullied a Christian friend of mine so much for wearing her crosses that she came to me crying.’
She claimed she became a targeted for the fundamentalists after she stood up for her friend who wants to be anonymous because she still works at the terminal.
In May, five of her Muslim colleagues complained to David Tunnicliffe, the trading manager at World Duty Free, accusing her of being anti-Islamic following a heated conversation in the store.
According to the Telegraph, her description of a Muslim colleague as an allawhi – ‘man of God’ in Arabic – sparked a row when another worker overheard the remark and thought she said Alawi, which was his branch of Islam.
Following the complaints she was suspended but was not told on what grounds until she met Mr Tunnicliffe in July.
Two days after the meeting she received a letter withdrawing her Heathrow security pass – needed to work at World Duty Free – because her comments were deemed ‘extremely inappropriate.’
Mrs Halawi, paid at World Duty Free on a freelance basis by cosmetic staff agency Caroline South Associates, was told that she would not be unable to continue working without her pass.
A petition signed by 28 colleagues, some of them Muslims, argued that she has been dismissed on the basis of ‘malicious lies.’
The Christian Legal Centre has instructed Paul Diamond, a leading human rights barrister, to represent Mrs Halawi in taking both Caroline South Associates and Autogrill Retail UK Limited, which trades as World Duty Free, to an employment tribunal.
A lawyer acting for CSA told the Sunday Telegraph: ‘The case is still pending so the company is not in a position to comment, but as far as the company is concerned she’s never been an employee and has never been dismissed.’
A World Duty Free spokesman said they were unable to comment because of ‘ongoing legal proceedings’.
Last week, Jewish businessman Arieh Zucker complained that he has been repeatedly singled out for full-body scans by Muslim security staff at the airport.
The 41-year-old mortgage broker, from London, has accused them of ‘race hate’ and is threatening to sue for racial discrimination after being made to ‘feel like a criminal’ while being scanned.

Saudis fear there will be ‘no more virgins’ and people will turn gay if female drive ban is lifted
Repealing a ban on women drivers in Saudi Arabia would result in ‘no more virgins’, the country’s religious council has warned.
A ‘scientific’ report claims relaxing the ban would also see more Saudis – both men and women – turn to homosexuality and pornography.
The startling conclusions were drawn by Muslim scholars at the Majlis al-Ifta’ al-A’ala, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious council, working in conjunction with Kamal Subhi, a former professor at the King Fahd University.
Their report assessed the possible impact of repealing the ban in Saudi Arabia, the only country in the world where women are not allowed behind the wheel.
It was delivered to all 150 members of the Shura Council, the country’s legislative body.
The report warns that allowing women to drive would ‘provoke a surge in prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce’.
Within ten years of the ban being lifted, the report’s authors claim, there would be ‘no more virgins’ in the Islamic kingdom.
And it pointed out ‘moral decline’ could already be seen in other Muslim countries where women are allowed to drive.
In the report Professor Subhi described sitting in a coffee shop in an unnamed Arab state.
‘All the women were looking at me,’ he wrote. ‘One made a gesture that made it clear she was available… this is what happens when women are allowed to drive.’
The astonishing report comes after Shaima Jastaniya, a 34-year-old Saudi woman, was sentenced to 10 lashes with a whip after being caught driving in Jeddah.
There has been strong protest in the country about the sentence – and about the law generally.
But resistance to reform and change remains strong among conservative royals and clerics.

Expert: There is an Islamization of History and Geography
Prof. Sharon of Hebrew U. explains: ‘Islam’s worldview is that all history and geography are Muslim’. Don’t confuse them with the facts.
By Elad Benari & Hezki Ezra
First Publish: 9/19/2011, 5:16 AM
Professor Moshe Sharon, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, took part on Sunday in the Holy Temple Conferences held by the Movement for Temple Renewal with the participation of leading temple-oriented organizations.
During the conference, which took place in the Great Synagogue in Jerusalem, Prof. Sharon warned against Islamic revisionist history, and explained the Islamic worldview of history and geography.
“The basic attitude [of Islam] is that all history is, in fact, Islamic history,” Sharon toldArutz Sheva. “That means that all the major figures of history are Muslims, from Adam down to our own time.”
Sharon said that this attitude assumes that any Jewish or Christian religious figure, be it the Jewish Kings David or Solomon and even the Christian Jesus, is in fact a Muslim figure, a fact that essentially dismisses any Jewish or Christian claim that is faith-based and, of course, ignores the incontrovertible fact that Islam began in the 7th century C.E with Mohammed and simply did not exist before that.
According to the Muslims, says Sharon, “Since the creation of the world there has been only one religion and that is the religion of Islam. So if anybody says, for example, that there is a place connected with Solomon and that’s the place where Solomon’s Temple stood, a true Muslim would tell you: ‘Yes, you’re absolutely right, but don’t forget that Solomon was a Muslim.’”
He added, “You can understand that through Islamization of history you’ve got Islamization of geography. Anywhere that was connected with these prophets, who were all Muslims [according to Islamic imagination], becomes Muslim territory.”
Sharon said that from Islam’s point of view, their appearance in history was that of a liberator, that is to liberate all the Muslim areas, according to their belief, that Jews or Christians had taken over.
Islam, to them, was revealed by Mohammed, but was the true religion from Creation on. Theologians and historians, however, define Islam and Christianity as “daughter religions” of Judaism, whose adherents claim that Judaism’s role is over and they have taken Judaism’s place.
“There is no Islamic occupation,” he said. “If somebody occupied anything, it will always be somebody else, not the Muslims. There’s no Islamic occupation, there’s only Islamic liberation.”

Saudi Textbook: The Enmity between the Muslims and the Jews Is Everlasting
A twelfth-grade Saudi textbook titled Studies from the Muslim World includes a chapter on Palestine and the Palestinian cause, which deals extensively with the Jews. The chapter presents the conflict over Palestine as a religious struggle between the Jews and the Muslims that goes back to the era of the Prophet Muhammad. It states that there is no hope of ever making peace with the Jews because they do not believe in peace, but only strive to spread corruption and instability throughout the world, for they are liars, connivers and cheats by nature. It also stresses that these negative traits of the Jews are described in the Koran, and quotes verses to prove this. Finally, the chapter states that the only way to liberate Palestine is through jihad.
The following are excerpts:
The book’s title page
The Struggle with the Jews Is Not Political but Religious
Page 91 reads: “Whoever studies the nature of the conflict between the Muslims and the Jews understands an important fact, [namely that] this is a religious conflict, not a dispute about politics or nationality, or a conflict between races or tribes, or a fight over land or country, as some describe it. This is a deeply rooted enmity, a conflict between truth and falsehood, between monotheism and polytheism, between heresy and faith. The enmity between us and the Jews will not cease under any circumstances until one of two things [happens]: either they join our religion and become Muslims, or we abandon our religion, God forbid. [Allah], may He be exalted, said [in the Koran]: ‘They [the Jews] will not cease fighting with you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can’ [Koran 2:217]; ‘And the Jews will not be pleased with you, nor the Christians, until you follow their religion’ [Koran 2:120].
“They are jealous of the fact that the Seal of the Prophets [i.e., Muhammad] came from among the Arabs and not from among the Children of Israel, and [because] they know well that our master, Muhammad, Allah’s prayer be upon him, was the Prophet of Allah… [As it says in the Koran:] ‘Those whom We have given the Book recognize him as they recognize their sons, and a party of them most surely conceal the truth while they know (it)’ [Koran 2:146]. Once we realize the essence of this conflict, and that this enmity cannot cease, we understand how much those who say the conflict can be settled are misleading [us].
“Our conflict with the Jews clearly began following the hijra of our master, Muhammad, Allah’s prayer be upon him, to Medina. It was then that the plots and schemes against the first Muslims began. [These Muslims waged] prolonged jihad against [the Jews], who were expelled from Medina in stages. The Banu Qaynuqa’ [tribe] was the first to be expelled, following the incident of the Muslim woman. Afterward, the members of the Banu Al-Nadir tribe were expelled, having tried to assassinate the Prophet, Allah’s prayer be upon him, and then, the Banu Qurayza [tribe], who breached their covenant with the Muslims and joined the camps [of Muhammad's Meccan enemies] in the Battle of the Trench [in 627 CE].”
The Jews Spread Corruption, Fitna, and Conspiracies
Pages 91-92 read: “Throughout Islamic history, the Jews have striven to destroy the [Islamic] religion and spread fitna among the Muslims. All know about thefitnacaused by the Jew ‘Abdallah bin Saba during the time of ‘Othman bin ‘Affan, may Allah be pleased with him.”
“In modern times, Jewish influence has cut deeply into several Western countries, and [the Jews] have taken control of their economies and media. These countries were exploited for the Jews’ benefit, and the two sides [i.e., the Jews and the West joined forces and] combined their interests in order to wipe out Islam. After Sultan ‘Abd Al-Hamid, Allah’s mercy be upon him, stood up to the Jews and rejected their tempting offers in exchange for Palestine, the Crusaders and Jews decided to destroy the Ottoman Islamic Caliphate so that Palestine would be handed to the Jews, and so that the imperialist countries could divide the Islamic world among themselves.
“[After] the Jews strayed from the correct religion brought [to them] by Moussa [Moses], peace be upon him, they did not take root in any land, nor did they legally own any land. They wandered in [various] regions, for wandering from place to place and being divided is in their nature. The Jews lived as oppressed minorities throughout the world, and caused corruption in every land they entered. In every country where they settled, they were a source of trouble and fitna. They build up their confidence by frightening others, which is why the peoples hated them and why they came to be known for their deceit and cunning.”
Page 106 reads: “Zionism does not aspire to win over the friendship of others, for it does not want them to join it. Therefore, the Jews’ relations with the nations among which they live have been characterized by tension and instability, which caused the peoples to support one another against [the Jews], to molest them, to deal them bitter blows, and to expel them. Since the Jews have been in the Diaspora, they have not known peace with any nation because they have [always] striven to [perpetrate] fraud, deceit, and cunning. There is no better proof of this than the Muslims’ experience with them in Medina – [which caused] the Prophet to expel them and order to banish them from the Arabian Peninsula – and what happened to them in countries such as Germany, Poland, Spain, and elsewhere.
“Throughout their history, the Jews have never attributed any importance to peace… believing it impossible to establish peace with other nations. They even believe that the nations around them must live in perpetual strife that will undermine their stability, so that they will be unable to fight [the Jews]. This may explain the Jews’ aspirations to spread destruction and corruption by various means, even in countries with which they claim to have what they call ‘peace agreements.’”
The Jews’ Corruption Is Described in the Koran
The textbook informs the pupils that the Jews’ characteristics and traits are described in the Koran, and goes on to list and explain them. Pages 92-94 read: “The noble Koran is the best source to acquaint us with the [Jews'] personality and psychological makeup. The expressions ‘Jews’ and ‘Children of Israel’ appear more than 63 times in the book of Allah, may He be exalted. They were the nation charged with ruling the earth, but Allah took their [role of] leadership away from them due to their corruption and destructiveness, and because they killed the prophets. The following are a few brief descriptions of some of their traits, as they appear in the noble Koran:
“1. Attacking the very essence of Allah, may He be exalted: No one will be spared their mischief, even the very essence of Allah [himself], may He be exalted. [Allah], the mighty and exalted, said: ‘And the Jews say: The hand of Allah is tied up! Their hands shall be shackled and they shall be cursed for what they say’ [Koran 5:64]… ‘Allah has certainly heard the saying of those who said: Surely Allah is poor and we are rich [Koran 3:181].
“2. [Spreading] corruption in the land: They are the people of corruption and destruction. They cast doubt on da’wa [calling to Islam], and spread rumors regarding the wives of the Prophet, Allah’s prayer be upon him, and spread evil among the Muslims. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘Their effort is for corruption in the land, and Allah does not love the corrupters’ [Koran 5:64].
“3. Killing prophets: [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘They went on rejecting the signs of Allah and slaying His prophets without just cause. This is because they rebelled and went on transgressing’ [Koran 2:61].
“4. Lying, spreading rumors and distorting [truths]: They are the people of lies, which are [all] they listen to, and they are the masters of falsifying and distorting the truth. Not even the prophecy of Allah escapes their distortion, and their Torah proves it. [Allah], may He be exalted, said: ‘The Jews (are) men who will listen to any lie and listen even to others who have never so much as come to you. They change the words from their (right) times and places’ [Koran 5:41].
“5. Deception and misleading: [Allah,] may He be exalted, said of them: ‘They say: There is no call on us (to keep faith) with these ignorant (pagans)’ [Koran 3:75].
“6. Rushing to [commit] sin: [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘And you will see many of them racing one another to [commit] sin and exceed the limits’ [Koran 5:62].
“7. Inciting to wars and fitna: [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘Whenever they kindle a fire for war, Allah puts it out’ [Koran 5:64].
“8. Breaching covenants and agreements: They are the nation best known for this characteristic. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘Because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them’ [Koran 5:13]. They breached their covenants with the prophets, [including] the Prophet Muhammad, Allah’s prayer be upon him, more than once, most famously when they breached their covenant with the Muslims and joined the polytheists on the day the [latter's forces] invaded [Medina].
“9. Racist tendencies and scorn for the other: They think they are God’s Chosen People. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘And the Jews and the Christians say: We are the sons of Allah and His beloved ones’ [Koran 5:18].
“10. Lust for life – any sort of life, even if it is despicable. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘And you will most certainly find them the greediest of men for life’ [Koran 2:96].
“11. Love of forbidden money: They hoard money by any means [possible]. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said of them: ‘(They are fond of) listening to falsehood, of devouring anything forbidden’ [Koran 5:42].
“12. Cheating: This is manifest in the story of their fishing for a big fish on the Sabbath, when they are forbidden to work. They cheated when they set the net before the Sabbath with the intent of bringing it in after [the Sabbath]. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘And ask them about the town which stood by the sea; when they exceeded the limits of the Sabbath, when their fish came to them on the day of their Sabbath, appearing on the surface of the water, and on the day on which they did not keep the Sabbath, they did not come to them; thus did We try them because they transgressed’ [Koran 7:163].
“13. Argumentativeness: The loathsome manner of their argumentativeness is manifest in the story of the cow and their violation and trickery in the matter of [the cow's] ritual slaughter. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘And when Moussa said to his people: Surely Allah commands you that you should sacrifice a cow; they said: Do you ridicule us? He said: I seek the protection of Allah from being one of the ignorant. They said: Call on your Lord…’ [Koran 67-68. See also verses 69-71].
“14. Their great hatred for the Muslims: [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘Certainly you will find the most violent of people in enmity for those who believe (to be) the Jews’ [Koran 5:82].
“15. Cowardice: In their hearts there is fear and anxiety, especially of the Muslims. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified towns or from behind walls’ [Koran 59:14].
“16. Envy: [Allah,] may He be exalted, said of them: ‘Many of the followers of the Book wish that they could turn you back into unbelievers after your faith, out of envy from themselves’ [Koran 2:109].
“17. Obstinacy: Regarding this, Allah, may He be exalted, said: ‘They said: We hear, and we disobey’ [Koran 2:93].
The Jews Will Be Forced Out of Palestine through Jihad
Among the reasons given for the Arabs’ defeats in their wars with the Jews are the following, which appear on page 105: “[One reason is] Islam’s estrangement from the domain of [religious] struggle with the Jews, and the appearance of false calls and slogans such as Arab nationalism and socialism. [Another reason is that] many in the ummah disregard the [true] essence of our conflict with the Jews, which is a purely religious struggle, with the Jews drawing their principles from their distorted books. Allah, may He be exalted and glorified, commanded us to pin our hopes on Him. [Allah,] may He be exalted, said: ‘And hold fast by the covenant of Allah all together and be not disunited’ [Koran 3:103].
On page 112, the book enumerates a Muslim’s obligations, including the following: “To overcome the spiritual defeatism that has harmed many of us. We are, as described by God, may He be praised and glorified, the greatest nation to have risen among mankind, and the Jews, as they are described by the noble Koran, are the most cowardly and life-lusting people, as has already been proven by the conflicts with the Jews throughout history.
“Jihad for the sake of Allah is the only path to liberating Palestine. Only through jihad did the Muslims conquer Jerusalem, and only through jihad did the Crusaders leave Palestine. Likewise, only through jihad will the Jews leave Palestine.
“The only point of departure in our handling of the issue of Palestine [should be] absolute faith in Islam and in the fact that all rulings related to this issue must be derived from [Islam].”
According to Muslim tradition, the conflict between the Muslims of Medina and the Jewish tribe of Banu Qaynuqa’ began after a Muslim woman visited the shop of a Jewish jeweler in the market, who demanded that she take off her veil. When she refused, he fastened her cloak with a pin in such a way that, when she got up, she was stripped naked. A Muslim killed the jeweler in retaliation, starting a chain of revenge killings between the sides.
According to some accounts, ‘Abdallah bin Saba was a Jewish convert to Islam who became a disciple of the fourth Caliph, ‘Ali bin Abu Talib, whom he considered to be divine, and therefore incited against the third Caliph, ‘Othman bin ‘Affan, bringing about his murder.
Iranian Cleric: U.S., Europe Will Become Islamist in Another Few Decades; Most American Women Would Rather Have a Dog and a Toyota than a Husband
In recent speeches, Ahmad-Hossein Sharifi, deputy chairman and research director at the Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute, discussed the dangers presented by the West to Iran’s Shi’ite society. He said that the West had decided to undermine this society by disseminating its corrupt, immoral, and anti-Islam culture, and that it was targeting Iran in particular – because Shi’ite Iran, unlike the Sunni Wahhabi Saudi Arabia, was the center of the pure Islam. Yet despite the West’s efforts, Sharifi added, Islam was spreading rapidly in the West, and the U.S. and Europe would become Islamic countries within a few decades.
The following are the main points of recent statements by Sharifi:
Sharifi: Americans “Would Rather Marry Animals or Robots than Human Beings”
At a November 19, 2011 conference in Hamadan dealing with the West’s “soft war” against the Iranian regime, Sharifi explained that the West had despaired of launching a military attack against Iran and that therefore it was trying to topple it from within by weakening its religious values and striking at the Iranian people’s obedience to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The following are the main points of his address:
“The military experts acknowledge that in order to conquer Iran, there is a need for at least two million troops, including land, marine, and aerial forces… [In contrast], the ‘soft war,’ which is being waged on the level of the society, aspires to change [our] people’s world view, monotheism, and religious principles, to destroy the values of [our] culture, politics, and society, and to change [our] way of life, including [our] architecture, music, leisure activity, dress, and cuisine.
“In the wake of the West’s negative propaganda on the Internet, on satellite [television channels], and in the media, there has been a proliferation of grave problems in [Iranian] society, such as keeping dogs [as pets] and attraction to corrupt, content-free music. On the political level, the main elements of the ‘cold war’ are weakening the status of the velayat-e faqih [rule of the jurisprudent], sowing division among the officials of the three authorities [in the Iranian regime], creating a rift between the people and [regime] officials, and using beautiful, attractive slogans. On the public level, this soft war is being waged by means of the Internet, films, [political] cartoons, and the print media.”
Sharifi called Western music “an element that disrupts a man’s reason” and complained that “today, with the approval of the [Iranian] Culture Ministry, there are translations [in Iran] of the lyrics of [songs performed by] devil-worshipping singers, who enmesh young people in loss of identity and loss of [moral] restraint.”
Sharifi harshly criticized the American family, saying “Today, 70% of married American women say that they would be happier if they had a dog and a Toyota instead of a husband.” He added that only 7% of American families were “reasonable” and the other 93% were rootless and single-sex; in some cases, he said, Americans “would rather marry animals and robots than a human being.”
At the same time, however, Sharifi stated that the Islamic way of life and Islam itself were spreading in the West: “In contrast to what people think, Islam is spreading in the world. For example, between 2000 and 2010, one thousand mosques were built in France, and 60 churches were turned into mosques or shut down. One out of every two babies born in the Netherlands is raised in a Muslim family, and therefore it can be expected that by 2025 all the Dutch will be Muslims. At the beginning of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, the Muslin population in the U.S. was 300,000 to 400,000 – but in light of the growth of the Muslim population in that country, this number today has reached nine million.”
Sharifi: In Another Few Decades, Europe and the U.S. Will Be Islamic
At an October 17, 2011 science conference in Qom, Sharifi expanded further on the spread of Islam and the Shi’a in the West. The following are the main points of his comments:
“Today, everyone acknowledges that the Islamic spirituality, and particularly Shi’ism, is spreading rapidly in the world – to the point where Islam has become an unrivalled religion in the world. If the Islamic trend continues at the present pace, the U.S. is predicted to become an Islamic country by 2070. According to these statistics, it is expected that by 2045 Germany will be completely Islamic; the Netherlands will also be completely Islamic by 2025, and by 2050 more than 70% of the French will be Muslims.”
Sharifi explained, “The Islamic societies [that will develop in the West] might not be ideal as far as we are concerned, but in general an Islamic spirituality will prevail in them, and they will gradually march towards the ideal spirituality.” He added that Western society was very fearful of this Islamic trend, and was therefore fighting “the pure Islam whose center is Iran.” He added, “Sowing doubt is one of the important elements that the ‘global arrogance’ [i.e. the West, led by the U.S.] uses in hope of harming the Shi’ite school of thought. This has expanded greatly in the past 20 years. The main target of the arrogant ones is Iran, and indeed we see that they do not fear the [Sunni Wahhabi]Islam of Saudi Arabia, but even encourage it and propagandize for it.”
Dismissing the concepts of individualism and sanctity of the individual promoted by the West, which he said came at the expense of the concepts of faith and community, he noted that “infiltration of [drug] rehabilitation centers is another weapon used by the enemies [of Iran].” He said, “The [Western] guidelines state that in order to recover from addiction, there is no hope in [turning] to God or to the imams, but only in trusting the ‘ego,’ and that there is no hope [in relying on] others, including resorting to the imams. This harms the infrastructure of monotheism and the imamate [i.e. the leading principle in Shi'ism – the belief in the 12 Shi'ite imams].”
Sharifi also warned that kindergartens were being infiltrated by non-Islamic beliefs, such as Baha’ism and Buddhism, by means of children’s television shows, among other means, which are a tool in the hands of the enemies of Islam: “I have learned that some time ago in two [northern Iran] provinces, Gilan and Mazandaran, 25 kindergartens linked to the Baha’is were identified and shut down.” He added that a recently released children’s film spreads Buddhism very cleverly, using children’s language.

Ten Years after 9/11, Arab Press Continues to Disseminate Conspiracy Theories
On the tenth anniversary of 9/11, as in previous years, mainstream Arab media are circulating conspiracy theories regarding the terrorist attacks, while avoiding an in-depth discussion of the events and their perpetrators.
The following are some examples:
In an article in the Saudi daily Al-Riyadh, columnist Muhammad Al-Suyani wrote: “Twenty years ago, when I was in New York, I was amazed at its skyscrapers. [Our] guide took us to the Empire State Building, now the tallest skyscraper in New York… In 1945, a B-25 bomber crashed into the [building's] 79th floor, which turned into a ball of hellfire that reached the 72nd floor. The fire was several times more intense than the one that [raged] in the [World] Trade [Center] 1 on September 11!
“After that fire, which happened almost 60 years ago, the Empire State Building is still standing, while the strong towers of the [World] Trade [Center], which were equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system, did not survive more than 60 minutes [of fire]! [The Empire State Building] stood firm because no one had planted explosives in its basement.
“Ten years of stupidity, and the world still believes that two planes tuned [the World Trade Center] to dust, and that Muslim youth are the ones who did it. Ten years, and we are stilling paying the cost of this lie!… Ask Ayman Al-Zawahiri and Al-Qaeda who blew up [World] Trade [Center] 7… on September 11. They don’t know! Ask Bush and his vice-president, Cheney, and their secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, who called her friend Willie Rant [sic, apparently Willie Brown], mayor of San Francisco, to warn him not to get on a plane on that day…”

The Sheikh of Al-Azhar in an Exceptionally Tolerant Article: Christianity, Judaism Share Basic Tenets of Islam; Relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims Must Be Based on ‘Mutual Recognition’
Al-Azhar, based in Cairo, is the most important center of learning and the supreme religious authority in the Sunni Muslim world. In an article published June 23, 2011 in the Egyptian government daily Al-Ahram, its head, Al-Azhar Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayeb, expressed remarkably tolerant views towards non-Muslims, especially Christians and Jews. He wrote: “A Muslim cannot imagine all of mankind sharing a single creed or turning to a single religion – even if this religion is Islam. As long as this remains the case, the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims [must be] one of mutual recognition. The Islamic world has absorbed all the religions of the known world. In its western regions it encountered the Abrahamic religions, Judaism and Christianity, and in its eastern region it encountered Hinduism and Buddhism.”
In the article, Al-Tayeb distinguishes between the fundamentals of the faith on the one hand and religious laws (shari’a) on the other. He states that the three Abrahamic religions – Islam, Judaism, and Christianity – share the fundamentals of faith, ritual, and morality, and differ only in their specific shari’a laws. He adds that since shari’a depends on circumstances of time and place, the existence of different shari’as is only natural. In saying this, he not only legitimizes Judaism and Christianity, but also implicitly sanctions the differences in shari’a between the Sunna and Shi’a, and among the various Sunni religious schools.
An examination of Al-Tayeb’s writing reveals that this trend of tolerance towards Christianity and Judaism goes back to his days as president of Al-Azhar University (2004-2010), though this recent article is the most far-reaching expression of this trend to date.
Al-Tayeb’s Views on Christianity in Previous Writings
In an Al-Ahram article published January 2007, Al-Tayeb stated that Islam’s ties with the religions that preceded it are not political, cultural, or social in nature; rather, they are ties of brotherhood, for Islam is a sister to the religions of Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. He stressed that Islam must open up, shed its self-imposed isolation, and stop treating the followers of other religions as enemies who must either be eliminated or drawn into the fold of Islam.
A tolerant stance towards Christians and Christianity is also evident in some of Al-Tayeb’s statements since his appointment as Sheikh of Al-Alzhar in March 2010. For example, in a July 2010 interview with Al-Ahram, he said that Islam regarded the Christians as part of the community of believers, “because they believe in Allah and in the Day of Judgment.” He added: “If the Prophet, in the Covenant of Al-Madina, regarded the Jews as part of the community of believers, then our Coptic maternal cousins are [certainly] worthy of [this designation].” He stressed that preserving national unity among Muslims and Copts in Egypt was a religious duty, and that one of Al-Azhar’s missions was to review Muslim history and faith and draw from them the wealth of Muslim traditions that encourage good relations with the Copts. Al-Tayeb stressed that the Copts had a right to manage their marital matters according to their own beliefs and customs, and to build houses of worship according to their needs. However, he contended that the role of president must be reserved for a Muslim, in accordance with the country’s Muslim majority.
After the January 25 revolution, Al-Tayeb repeated that the Copts had the right to be judged according to their own religious laws, and advocated inserting a stipulation to this effect into Clause Two of the Egyptian constitution, which defines Islam as the state religion and the principles of shari’a as the primary source for legislation.
Periods of Conflict Between Al-Azhar, Vatican
On two occasions, Al-Tayeb responded sharply to statements by Pope Benedict XVI, which he perceived as offensive to Islam or as interference in Muslim affairs. The first occasion was after the Pope’s September 2006 lecture, which enraged Muslims worldwide, and prompted Al-Tayeb to demand an official apology. The second occasion was following the Pope’s call, in January 2011, to protect Christians in Egypt (after the New Year’s Eve attack on the Church in Alexandria) – a call Al-Tayeb perceived as interference in Egypt’s affairs. In response to this latter statement, Al-Tayeb said: “We have grown used to the honorable Pope saying that the Muslims did not understand his [September 2006] speech, but now we cannot ignore what happened. The Pope does not act and is not shocked when rivers of Muslim blood flow in Iraq and Palestine, but he is shocked when [the bloodshed] is somehow related to Christians…” Al-Tayeb called on the Pope to urge America and Europe to stop selling weapons to the Middle East that fuel terrorism.
Later on, Al-Azhar’s Academy of Islamic Research announced a freeze of its dialogue with the Vatican. Al-Tayeb explained that Al-Azhar was interested only in “constructive dialogue with monotheists, based on mutual respect.” He added that when Al-Azhar sends a message of brotherhood and peace to the Vatican, it expects an identical message in return, and that it was “surprised to hear nothing but [ever] more extremist positions.” Al-Azhar stressed that the interfaith dialogue with Egyptian Churches and other international bodies would continue.
Al-Tayeb’s Position on Interfaith Dialogue
In the past, Al-Tayeb participated in interfaith dialogue conferences and expressed his support for such dialogue. However, in recent years he has expressed reservations about interfaith conferences, criticizing the way they are conducted. For example, in a May 2010 article, he implied that interfaith dialogue conferences engage in polite banalities instead of tackling fundamental problems that hinder cooperation and peace. He suggested that they should focus on promoting mutual respect among members of different faiths, rather than mutual recognition, and added that they should avoid dealing with the theological differences between different religions, since faith is not open to amendments. Al-Tayeb emphasized that the dialogue must focus on the commonalities between the monotheistic faiths: belief in God, in His oneness, and in the monotheistic holy scriptures. In this article, and on other occasions, he stressed that a plurality of faiths is desirable according to Islam, and that he does not wish to bring all of humanity under one faith. He added: “As a Muslim, I am not required to carry a sword to convert members of other faiths in this generation. I am required to know other peoples and to maintain ties with them that are beneficial to both sides…”
It should be noted that despite the tolerance towards Judaism reflected in some of his articles, Al-Tayeb refuses to conduct dialogue with Jewish rabbis or participate in conferences they attend. In one case, he said: “The Children of Israel only expect the dialogue to drag the Arabs toward normalization, without granting the Palestinians anything real. The Prophet maintained with the Jews relations [characterized by] a high degree of friendship and respect – to the extent that if a Muslim desired to marry a Jewish woman, he asked him not to require her to convert, and to take her to synagogue to pray. However, despite this, few Jews are inclined toward justice. The Arabs and Palestinians must know that Israel will not grant them their rights on a silver, copper, or paper platter… The Palestinians must unite in order to protect their legitimate rights and exercise their legitimate right to resist occupation, with everything this entails…”
Al-Tayeb’s Position on the Shi’a
Previous statements by Al-Tayeb also reflect a relatively moderate position on the Shi’a. For example, he said that “the differences [between Sunna and Shi'a] are not fundamental. [The Shi'ites] believe in Allah, the One and the Eternal, as do we [Sunnis]. They follow Muhammad and hold the Koran sacred, as do we. We can pray behind their Imams, and vice versa. The difference lies only in the [relative] importance they ascribe to each of the Caliphs, because they believe ‘Ali is the most worthy and righteous [of the Caliphs], and they believe in their succession of Imams and in their Mahdi, whose [return] they await.”
Al-Azhar’s Status in Post-Revolutionary Egypt
Al-Tayeb’s June 2011 article in Al-Ahram, presented below, should be seen as part of Al-Azhar’s effort to take an active role in shaping the character of post-revolutionary Egypt, and in countering the positions of extremist Islamic streams, which have become more prominent lately in Egypt’s public discourse. A key component in this effort was the Al-Azhar Document, published on June 20, 2011. This historic document, drafted by Al-Tayeb and other Egyptian intellectuals, seeks to define the status of religion in the Egyptian state. Continuing the moderate Islamic line typical of Al-Azhar, it evoked lively responses from various Egyptian sectors. By contrast, the recent Al-Ahram article, published several days later, has thus far received little attention in the media.
Following are excerpts from the article:
“Pondering the Verses of the Noble Koran, One Realizes that ‘Islam’ Does Not Refer Exclusively to the Message Revealed to Muhammad”
“Islam is the latest link in the system of divine religion, which was revealed by all the prophets and messengers, from Adam to Muhammad, Allah’s prayers be upon them all.
“Pondering the verses of the Noble Koran, one realizes that ‘Islam’ does not refer exclusively to the message revealed to Muhammad PBUH; rather, it is the name given to all the messages conveyed by [all] the prophets in their various times and places. Therefore, it is natural that the prophets preceding Muhammad are [also] described [in the Koran] as Muslims, and that Noah, Abraham, and ‘Issa [Jesus] are each called Muslim, just like Muhammad. A look at the Koranic verses… is enough to convince one that these glorious figures in the roster of prophecy are all described as Muslims. [The essence of] this religion, shared by Muslims and other nations that preceded them, is absolute monotheism and the belief in Allah’s messengers and books.
“The fact that all the divine revelations are [revelations] of a single religion should not lead us to believe that they all share the same religious law [shari'a]. ‘Religion’ is the constant core essence of each revelation. It is one and does not vary, because it is anchored in universal, constant truths that do not change. Conversely, religious law does vary from one divine revelation to the other. By ‘religion’ we mean the divine message that goes to the common universal principles shared by all revelations, such as the fundamental tenets of faith, morals, and worship. But ‘religious law’ is the divine law that regulates the life and social behavior of the believers, which changes from time to time and from place to place. While religion, according to the philosophy of Islam, is one, religious law is not. It varies among people, and in accordance with the environment, time, place and circumstances. Therefore, the Koran emphasizes the variety of religious law among the believers: ‘To each among you have we prescribed a law and a course. If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single nation [5:48].’
“We notice that, despite the variety of religious law among groups of believers, the unity of religion creates a bond of love, similar to a family bond, among all the believers wherever they are, and whatever their laws and religious messages. This is the actual state of the Islamic world, which has absorbed all the religions of the known world. In its western regions it encountered the Abrahamic religions, Judaism and Christianity, and in its eastern region it encountered Hinduism and Buddhism, and it presented to history shining models of mutual human relationships, flowing from human brotherhood combined with the brotherhood of faith.
“This has indeed been my own personal experience in Upper Egypt, where for many centuries we Muslims have lived alongside our Christian brethren, the Copts. Going one step further in clarifying the relationship between Islam and other religions, we find that this organic unity does not stop at the essential boundaries of religion – namely the principles of faith, worship, and morals – but extends further, to include the relationship between the Prophet of Islam and the prophets who preceded him, as well as the relationship between the Koran and the revealed books that came before it. The Prophet of Islam affirmed the veracity of [the words of] his brethren the prophets, and believed in them, and he completed what they had begun, namely [the task of] calling people to God. The Muslims find this idea [in the Koran, recurring] again and again: ‘The Messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers; they all believe in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers; We make no difference between any of His messengers; and they say: We hear and obey, our Lord! Thy forgiveness (do we seek), and to Thee is the eventual course [Koran 2:285].’
“Muhammad PBUH used beautiful words to describe this organic bond uniting him with his brethren, the prophets and messengers throughout history, saying: ‘Of all people, I am the closest to Jesus son of Mary, both in this world and the next. The Prophets are like brothers [who are] the sons of one father by different wives. They have different mothers, but their faith is one… Their father is their common faith; their different mothers are the times and places [in which they appeared], which distinguish them from one another.
“The same is said of the Koran. It affirms [the truth of] the [other] divine books in their original form, [before] it was distanced from its divine source. The Koran teaches us that the New Testament affirms and supports the Torah, and that the Koran affirms and supports both the New Testament and the Torah, as well as all the preceding divine books: ‘He has revealed to you the Book with truth, verifying that which is before it, and He revealed the Torah and the New Testament before it, a guidance for the people [Koran 3:4].’
“A religion whose philosophy is based upon such an organic unity with other divine revelations… [supported] by explicit [Koranic] texts that leave no room for ambiguity or concealment, must inevitably give rise to a civilization that is tolerant and open towards other civilizations… based on [a relationship] where each [civilization] recognizes and complements the other, rather than on mutual conflict and exclusion. Space does not permit me to present [all] the evidence for this thesis, so I shall confine myself to the following facts:
“The Koran, which many Muslims know by heart, affirms that had God wished all men to have one religion, one creed, one color, and one language, he would have [created them] so. But he did not want this. Instead, he wanted to create them with differing religions, creeds, colors and languages, and [willed] this variety to continue [forever,] until the universe ends: ‘And if your Lord had pleased, He would certainly have made people a single nation, and they shall not cease to differ [Koran 11:118]‘.
“From this variety that God has chosen for people, it follows that religions and creeds vary and it shall remain so until God inherits the earth and all that is on it. We can say that the variety of creeds and the persistence [of this variety] is both a Koranic truth and a universal one. Therefore, a Muslim cannot imagine all of mankind sharing a single creed or turning to a single religion – even if this religion is Islam. As long as this remains the case, the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims [must be] one of mutual recognition. This is what the Koran stipulated in an explicit and unambiguous text, saying: ‘Mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that you may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the most pious. Allah is the Knower, the Wise [Koran 49:13]‘.
“The Koran Uses the Word ‘Believers’ as an Inclusive Term for Both Muslims and Byzantines”
“Reviewing the history of Islamic civilization, we see that this civilization was committed to the Islamic principles that I described [in its dealings] with the religions, civilizations and peoples that it encountered. An exhaustive review of this history… is impossible, of course, so we shall focus very briefly on Islam’s tolerance towards Christianity… In the Koran there is a beautiful story about the prophet ‘Issa [Jesus] and his mother, the Virgin Mary, in Surat Maryam [Sura 19, which relates the stories of John the Baptist and the birth of Jesus]. There is also anothersura, called Surat Al-Roum, [which refers to] the eastern Christians who [lived in the lands] bordering the Islamic state and were the Muslims’ closest neighbors. History tells us that, when the pagan Persians defeated the Christian Byzantines, the pagan Arabs mocked the Muslims for this Byzantine defeat [to the pagans]. When the Muslims complained about this to the Prophet, the revelation came that the Byzantines would overcome the Persians within a few years, and that the believers, Muslim and Christians, would rejoice in Allah’s victory. We read the words of Allah: ‘The Byzantines have been defeated in the nearby land, but having been defeated, they shall triumph within a few years. Allah’s is the decision, both before and after, and then the believers shall rejoice in Allah’s victory. He grants victory to whomever He wishes. He is almighty and merciful [Koran 30:2-5].’ Allah’s promise came true, and the Muslims rejoiced in the victory of the Christian Byzantines. It should be noted that, in these verses, the Koran uses the word ‘believers’ as an inclusive term for both Muslims and Byzantines. This term [reflects] the unity of religion discussed above, which almost renders the two groups into a single nation, distinct from the nation of idolatry and polytheism. Surat Al-Roum was one of the earliest Koranic suras to be revealed, which means that the fraternity between Muslims and Christians was affirmed from the earliest years of Islam’s history and continued until the last years of Muhammad’s mission. We find in Surat Al-Maida Allah’s words to his Prophet, saying: ‘You shall find that the nearest in affection to those who believe are the ones who say “we are Christians.” That is because there are priests and monks among them, and they are free from pride [Koran 5:82].’”
“What We Have Said about the Attitude of Islam towards Christianity is Equally Applicable to Judaism”
“What we have said about the attitude of Islam towards Christianity is equally applicable to Judaism, which Islam encountered in Medina, and in which it discovered many similarities [to its own teachings] about monotheism and divine law. The historical Covenant of Medina provides an adequate glimpse into the relationship between Islam and Judaism. Suffice it to mention that one of the clauses of this document states that the Jews are one of the nations of believers, [saying]: ‘The Jews have their religion, and the Muslims have theirs. The Jews have their expenses and the Muslims have theirs.’ This indicates that Islam allows diversity of religion and economic independence to others, in a spirit of brotherhood among the faiths.”
